Dual Booting: How to run multiple operating systems

Pity the poor PC user, who has to struggle with the clumsy DOS-based FDISK utility to partition a hard disk, or resort to  third party tools such as PowerQuest's PartitionMagic. A number of Mac storage vendors supply elegant MacOS-based partitioning tools that can help you partition your drive into smaller "virtual drives" that behave almost exactly like separate physical units. In this upcoming article, we'll take a look at how you can partition a drive and why you might want to.

Why Partition?
Many users create multiple partitions to decrease search time, simplify backups and better organize data. Need a better reason? Unless you are using Apple's HFS Plus hard disk format, you will almost certainly gain additional hard disk capacity by partitioning your drive. You will definitely need to partition your Mac drive if you want to install Mac OS X, A/UX, Linux or some other foreign operating systems.
